We recently had our Community Group (a hipper name for a small group) Christmas Party at our house. Although Ugly Sweater parties seemed to be the big thing this year, we decided to stick with the more traditional White Elephant Gift Exchange. (Quick question - does anyone know the origen of the name White Elephant?) Here is a photo of our group with the gifts. (Notice my gift ... I'm modeling it - apparently there's just no getting away from the proverbial ugly sweater.
Oh, you need a closer look? Here you go.

The origins of the term "White Elephant" came from King Phillip III. Upon arriving in Africa to improve relations between England and Africa, a large welcoming party was held and according to custom, gifts were exchanged between the two kings. King Phillip III brought a beautiful mink coat for the African king. In return, King Phillip received a rare albino elephant or "white" elephant along with a sack of crackers, the beasts favorite snack.
King Phillip was unimpressed with his gift as he had absolutely no need for a white elephant, and upon his return to England, gave the beast to his nephew, Christopher Columbus, just prior to his departure for the New World.
Unable to do anything with the beast at such short notice, Mr Columbus was forced to bring the white elephant gift along on the Mayflower and it has been passed around America ever since.
